Say no to Ebay, you ask? Yes, absolutely! Allow a minute for explanation, if you will...
While Ebay does NOT allow sale of pets here, or ANYwhere else, it seems curious, that they DO allow the sale of cats and dogs in China. Ebay DOES have domestic
cats/dogs for sale on more than just their China site-They LIED, no surprise there, really... You can find cats/dogs on Ebay's Mexican site, for example.... however, not on any version of Ebay we
see in the US, only on the country-specific Ebay sites.
So what, you're probably thinking... which would be true, if it weren't the REASON these animals are sold in these other countries...
Not for pets, that's for sure...
The primary purpose for the sale of domestic dogs and cats, in many countries, is for FUR and FOOD. Imagine, fur trade of domestic cats and dogs, or as soup in a
restaurant!
Being as there are several links which explain these issues in MUCH better detail, and are written far better than I can bang out in a hurry, I'm going to ask that you click on some of the
following links regarding this horror. All links open in a new window.
Please also view the correspondance between a concerned individual, and the Ebay powers that be over Ebay's policy of allowing live animals to be auctioned thru their Ebay China site. They not
only are quite aware, they are quite PROUD of the fact!
Lastly, while I'm not much of a graphic artist, please grab one of my "SAY NO WAY TO EBAY" logos, to help spread the word. One voice added to another, and another, becomes a roar... links for
emailing Ebay over this issue are listed further down this page.
Thank you for taking time to care, and PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD.
Thank you for writing to Bill Cobb. My name is Del, a specialist with eBay's Prohibited Items department, and Bill has asked that I respond to your inquiry on his behalf.
Please know that I understand your concern in this matter. As it stands, live animals and pets are not permitted to be sold on any eBay site other than eBay China. Please remember that eBay is a worldwide community, with members residing in almost every area of the world. Along with a worldwide membership comes a diverse array of items for trade, and in many cases the types of items members may list may not coincide with the cultures and laws of other areas of the world. For the most part, however, we feel that it is important to respect that diversity.
The practice of selling domestic animals has been happening in China for a very long time, and has become part of the Chinese culture. Additionally, animals such as dogs are more widely kept as pets in China than in the United States. As a result, and as this activity is an important part of Chinese culture, we do not see a reason why such activities cannot take place on eBay China.
Of course, the sale of animals is not allowed on any other eBay site, which is why eBay China auctions for animals are confined to China and cannot be seen on other eBay sites. Please know that our position is only as a marketplace through which people meet and conduct business between each other, rather than a venue for the promotion or recommendation of cultural change. Of course there may be circumstances where such auctions may be ended for other reasons, as is the case with practically any auction on eBay; however, we generally do not see a need to interrupt this area of Chinese business at this time.
NAME REMOVED, I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to speak with you today. Please feel free to contact our department directly at moreinfo@ebay.com if you have any additional questions or concerns. On behalf of Mr. Cobb, I thank you kindly for your time, and I wish you the best of luck in future trading.
Regards,
Del on behalf of Bill Cobb President eBay North America
